Igniting Growth

The Five Aspirations

Friday, October 31, 2014

There are glass half empty people and glass half full people.  Both are useful at given moments.  In innovation, however, I think there is a need to be optimistic and aspirational. The creative act requires it.   ..

WOW-the power of failure!

Monday, October 27, 2014

I just finished teaching my graduate school class on design thinking for business. For a few weeks each fall I have graduate marketing, research, finance and mba students learning how to solve a classic business/marketing problem using design thinking methods and mindsets.   ..

The kitchen table of innovation

Thursday, October 16, 2014

The heartbeat of a home is usually the kitchen table. It is where people gather around for meals, homework, coffee. It draws people in and it invites conversation.  I have noticed that, just like a kitchen table is the pulse of a home, most innovation studios that are flowing have a similar gathering spot for their designers and staff.  One design leader I know told me it is the absolutely first thing she does when she  moves into a new studio--to put a table in a central spot that invites pausing, conversation, sharing of ideas and meals. Innovation requires that random collisions occur and diverse perspectives intersect.   An inviting table in a central location can help those collisions and intersections to happen.  Sometimes the simplest of things can make a huge impact.  ..

Innovation is rose colored

Complex doesn't have to be complicated

Friday, August 29, 2014

We live in a complex world.  Interdependent like never before. Flat. Volatile. The US Military coined it as VUCA--volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous.  True in world powers. True in business.  Sometimes I hear people longing for the good old days when things were simple. Life is so complicated now.  It doesn't have to be.  It is a choice to respond to complexity with complicatedness or to respond to connectedness and interdependency with control.   ..

It's not rocket science, it is human science.

I have been recently wowed by the 21C Museum Hotel in Cincinnati.  I have really high expectations so being wowed is a high hurdle.  Recently, I led a innovation workshop there. I was worried about it because my experience with hotels and innovation workshops has been mostly dissatisfying.  Rooms not set up as requested or technology not present or in working order.  Dark rooms that lower energy.  When I arrived at 21C, everyone was welcoming and pleasant and everything was as requested and in working order.  It was easy.  Not a wow, just what I expected, which for hotels is a step up.   ..
